2008 has been a rather eventful year full of ups and downs. During the year, we experienced record highs but we also sank to new lows due to the global financial crisis. We must face many challenges in the coming years, namely to restore investor confidence in the mining industry, which was strongly shaken by this unprecedented crisis. Nevertheless, the mining industry is used to rising up to a challenge and has shown, on many occasions in the past, its ability to pull together.
In this context, and for the benefit of its members, the AEMQ is hard at work to make sure that Québec remains at the forefront of the mineral exploration industry, both in Canada and the world. The new board of directors will tackle many challenges concerning current issues, namely: land access, regulation, company financing, geoscience data, social responsibility, and access to qualified manpower. For many years, Québec has had a competitive edge, but this advantage remains fragile. The AEMQ therefore has a mission to defend issues that could imperil the leading position currently held by Québec on the global scene. Thus, the AEMQ board of directors, supported by its permanent staff, remains in touch with AEMQ members and welcomes their input, asking them to share their concerns, comments or questions concerning our industry. The AEMQ is also collaborating with numerous government stakeholders including the MRNF, having established with the latter a close relationship for the benefit of both parties.
In conclusion, I invite you to attend in great numbers our main events in 2009, namely the « Abitibi Convention 2009 » in September in Rouyn-Noranda, and « Québec Exploration 2009 » in November at the Château Frontenac. The two events will provide opportunities for each of us to exchange and celebrate our successes.
